Come Jerry ,Look Alice,She Can Read!

Yes, come Jerry, come!
Look Jerry, look!
M.N. can read! She is a reader!
(above is MN exclaiming "I can read"! while holding up her first reader and her new purse )
M.N.is so excited . She and I have been having 'reading days' to help her grasp the wonderful world of reading. We began using the reader whose pictures I have incorporated into this post. I have to tell you, I was beginning to think this was going to be a very long process for her. I used many ways to help her grasp the concept of reading and unashamed bribery was part of it. I promised her that when she could read this entire reader we would go shopping for whatever she wanted within a certain price range. In spite of her enthusiasm and hard work, she just was not grasping this precious skill. I also prayed. I believe reading is a blessing, a gift from God. It enables one to unlock so much knowledge and so many worlds, and most importantly, one can read GOD'S WORD!
MN does not read sounds as much as she is ( my words here ) a WORD reader, which is how her mother and I taught ourselves how to read. Somehow, some way, over the last 2 weeks things just clicked into place and SHE CAN READ!!!!! When I picked her up to take her to my home for reading day she was positively bouncing off the walls and eager to read to me. AND SHE DID!!!!! Well, we had to go directly to the store where she picked herself out something she wanted. When we went to my home MN read to me the entire reader and I was able to ascertain ( like the big words?) she really could read, and had not just memorized the book. I was almost in tears of joy and happiness for her. Way to go granddaughter~
Come Jerry, come. Let us go see MN's new prize for learning how to read!
READ: "to note, follow, or apprehend the characters of a book, manuscript, inscription or the like." Funk & Wagnalls Dictionary
Look Alice, look!Look at MN's prize. It is a Barbie teacher, student and playground set. Look Alice , look. MN is playing with her new prize! Reading:"The act , practice, or art of perusing written or printed matter and ascertaining or considering it's contents or meaning." Funk & Wagnalls Dictionary
Hooray, hooray! MN can read! She can read! "Let him that readeth understand..." Mark 13:14 reader illustrations by Margaret and Florence Hoopes from 'SKIP ALONG' pub. 1947

Good Morning Kathy, I am so happy for you and MN! She looks so excited and I am so proud of her. What a thrill that must be for you and her Mother too. Just think how she will enjoy reading this Summer. I love her prize and think she deserves it for a job well done. Hope you all have a great weekend.

Learning to read is a gift, and learning to LIKE it-even better. I love her expressions that you've captured with the camera. Her enthusiasm shines through.

What a great adventure M.N. has engaged upon; I wish her well in her journey. I love to read, started reading when I was 4 and it's opened up the entire world to me.

Mildred,I don't think I even came close to describing her excitement about reading, and her prize! She can now read about babies and keeping house, her favorite topics, all by herself!

Southern Comfort, reading really is an amazing thing when we consider it. Useful, usually necessary, but you're right, to like it, or even love it is the best!

Susie,I am privileged and truly honored to be a part of this, kind of a way of being forever in someone's memory too. Whenever she thinks about reading she will think of me, her Granny!

Amy, she will read your congrats and I know she'll smile big and happy when she does!

My Letters To Emily,thank-you, and also, I looked up your blog...it was a gift to read and soak up. Thank-you for commenting so I could find you!

Deanna, I remember those readers too and have a few. Did you know they are collector's items now?

Brenda Kay, thank-you! Reading, how can i contain my enthusiasm for it...well, I can't ! So I am very excited she can read now~

Vickie, my sentiments exactly! Thank-you~

Sandra, I believe I was reading by the age or 4 and I know MN's mother was...we were pretty much self-taught, so although MN is a late-bloomer as far as family goes, she is now a READER and she too can have many new worlds opened up for her, especially the home-making type of reading, her favorite.

Daisy, I had a feeling you would like the big word, you have no idea how many people roll their eyes at me when I use my normal vocabulary...but I do believe a librarian such as yourself can appreciate the use of a variety of words :)

Mary, thank-you friend! That means a lot to me.

Shelley, I can't wait to see what else she chooses to read.

Julie, and when she teaches her children how to read may she relay these memories to them!
