Silly ( Stupid?) Sheep

This is Chicory and yes, her head IS stuck in the fence. For the umpteenth time!
Not to worry though, in between baaing and bawling loudly, she takes time to snack on the grass on the other side of the fence. She won't starve while waiting yet again for us to dis-entangle her from the fence.
SEE?
This is Chicory's half sister, Buttercup with her ram lamb Basil by her side. She too is stuck in the fence for the umpteenth time, in one day! Lest you think she is lacking grass on her side of the fence, look again...lots of lush green grass is growing on her side of the fence, but you know the old saying, "the grass is always greener on the other side of the fence". I only have two 2-horned sheep and they are the only sheep constantly getting stuck in the fences. The 4 to 6 horned sheep don't fit through the fences and the polled ( hornless) sheep don't get stuck. I know, I know, I need to fix the fences so the sheep can't get their horns through but have had no spare time this week.As I reflect on how many times my husband and I have had to go and release the silly sheep I think if we could have consolidated a chunk of that much time we could have done a very fine job of fence adjustment for these sheep. Today we will. But don't you think they would have learned already that this is bad, bad, BAD for them? Above is Basil , standing by his Mom, Buttercup, STUCK AGAIN! There is a reason we are called sheep in the Bible, and why we need a shepherd, THE Shepherd. My sheep inevitably return time after time to the very things that get them in trouble and don't seem to learn their lesson. Then they run away from me or struggle with me when I am only trying to help them. Silly, foolish, needy, wonderful, and beloved sheep. I love them, but nowhere near as much as our Shepherd, Jesus , loves and cares for us, His sheep. "All we like sheep have gone astray, we have turned every one to his own way; and the Lord hath laid on Him the iniquity of us all." Isaiah 53:6 Below is a video of a man talking about the very verse quoted above. It is longer than I like to post, because I know you are all busy people and over 5 minutes is a big chunk of time. However, I was enchanted by his accent, the scenic background, and could have listened to him even longer ( so I listened to him twice). May all you sheep of His pasture rejoice in the safety and security of the Shepherd's care and love. May those of you without the Shepherd seek Him~ Happy Sunday

Beautiful, silly sheep. I'm sure the sheep wouldn't appreciate it, but maybe someone should make a round disc that goes on the end of the horns, so they won't fit through the fence.... HA!
Thanks for sharing the video.... love it!

Too bad the fence is not some kind of rubbery thing that they could pull out of! :D

Such a relief to know experienced keepers of horned beasties have the same issues - last night I was headed to town to return dvd's and heard the distinctive bleats of a small goat in distress. Idjit wether had his head stuck fast - I had to drive into neighbor's drive - walk through some high weeds and release him by some serious head twisting and shoving. They absolutely do NOT learn - the babies are one thing - their horns are such new equipment - but the older goats are just gluttons.
Wonderful video - all we like sheep are gone astray - and have a wise and faithful Shepherd who leads us Home.

I smiled about your sheep - they must know that you will always be their savior:- - thus it's worth the risk w/ the fence. :-)

Those silly sheep are indeed lucky to have you to take care of them even if they don't learn from their past mistakes. And, yes, we are the same way, making mistakes and not learning from them, but we are taken care of just the same. I enjoyed the analogy, Kathy. Happy Sunday to you!

Beautiful sheep and Basil is just gorgeous! It is not just sheep that aggravates their owners with this, goats do it too! Mine will do it until their horns get too big to go through the fence, they never learn though. It has nothing to do with grass often because mine are out in a pasture full of grass and they are putting their heads through the fence into the drylot. No grass there. Go figure.

I have never, ever had a goat learn NOT to put their head through the fence no matter how many times they get stuck. I have a yearling now I am seriously thinking of duck taping a broom handle to her horns for awhile and if it comes to that I hope the other goats all have a good laugh at her too. LOL! Jokes aside, got to love them and their antics. They don't let life get boring.

excellent post, Kathy! You are exactly right in your lesson about the sheep!

Our gophers have not started digging this summer yet...hmmm...I'm not sure why unless I killed them all last year (which I highly doubt). I think it's cuz we've had no rain and usually they renovate their burrows due to cave-ins from the water. I'm sure business will pick up soon tho! Ya'll having any luck?

Such a wonderful post, and we really do need the Great Shepherd walking with us everyday. Like the way you reminded us.

Timi, your sheep DEFINITELY have horns to long to fit through fences!

Mildred, Thank-you~

Dolores,I have seen collars made to prevent sheep from sticking their heads through fences, a disc on the horns is a good idea. I just put smaller fence wire over the parts of the fence they could fit their horns through.

Julie,another good idea.

LindaSue,I enjoyed your story too. I have strained my back bending over to twist, lift, and turn a stubborn sheep;s head out of a small square.

Shelley, I think they just know somehow or some way they are going to get the grass on the other side of the fence and they will be O.K. because we do always bail them out.

Daisy, as I was fuming over the 3rd time before noon I had to release one of the sheep from the fence I stopped and realized how very much like that I am in relation to God, and He is always there for me!( and much more patient than I am with my sheep)

Deanna, thank-you!Don't you love that guys' accent?

Kathleen, thank-you. In the sheep's defense, often the grass IS greener on the other side of the fence, but sometimes it just LOOKS greener. Another reminder to myself~

Susie, welcome to my world lately. It is HARD, HARD, HARD to get them un-stuck and sometimes I have to wait for my husband to come home to help me.

Debbie, thank-you. I missed you, but then I have been gone a lot lately too. Mostly outside working hard and falling asleep on the sofa early in the evening because I am exhausted and really did intend to blog but couldn't wake up~

Jennifer, I am so glad to read of your experience. I have not been able to make the sheep learn NOT to do this either. I really can see where the Bible is right on in comparing us with sheep, we do need a shepherd!I like the idea of duct taping a broom handle on the goat, I might try that one.

Vickie, just like you, there is a lull in mole activity and I would like to think my husband got 'em all, but I know that is not the case. I predict lots of activity soon, the moles are just busy reproducing now!( raising an army)

Nancy M` you made me laugh. It is just like us ,isn't it?

Leedra, thank-you !
