Pumpkins For Eggs

 Huh?
 It's big !
 What is it ?
I break open the pumpkin for my new laying flock.
 They are intrigued.
My bantam flock of barred Cochins is too.
Feeding frenzy!
This is a great time of the year for me and my new laying flock of chickens. For one thing, they are all finally laying eggs. We are cleaning up the vegetable garden, the windfalls of apples are abundant, and there are plenty of pumpkins available, and after Halloween, even more, FREE! This means the chickens are eating very well because they get all the old produce we choose not to eat, and they turn it into yummy eggs!

Amy, chickens are so much fun for me. Do you grow your own pumpkins? How are you doing?

Pretty hens, Kathy! They'll love the pumpkin!

My coop/run looks like a couple of my hens exploded - they are moulting and there are feathers everywhere!

I have flock envy! What a sweet bunch of girls. I'm missing ours - they were all the victims of a mink - the second time in 10 years. We've found that it is almost impossible to foil them. I love the idea of cracking open a pumpkin for the hens - lucky gals!

Maple Lane, we are doing very well. The rain is back and I am loving the indoor time the rain affords me. Of course, it means I am out in the rain for when I am feeding the animals.

Sara, the dark brown eggs are from my Marans, and the green eggs are from my Americaunas.I love the contrast of the egg colors.

Vickie,my turkeys are molting and the other day I took a close look just to make sure there were no dead turkeys, what with all the feathers. But no, just a lot of naked turkeys. I hope they grow most of their feathers back before it gets too much colder !

Pondside,it is so much fun to watch them eat pumpkin and chase each other around for the pumpkin seeds.I would miss my chickens so much, but it is so hard to prevent minks & weasels from killing because they can get into practically any chicken pen or house.

I won't have any of the lovely chocolatey brown eggs but next spring hoping for plenty of "easter egger" production. Going to try using sand instead of wood shavings in coop - then scoop out the "poultry gold" for composting. Hope to move my chicks to coop this week - they have outgrown their nursery environment.
Fun pictures!

I've never been able to get a compost pile going, partly because for so long I had chickens to do that work for me. Nothing was more fun than to dispose of all those scraps and make the chickens happy and busy at the same time. Your birds are lovely!

Kathy, my sheep love pumpkins, squash and anything with seeds. Well, maybe not tomatoes...haven't tried those. The eggs are beautiful, bet they are Bright Orange inside.
